The link between probiotics and Candida infections

What is Candida Yeast Infection?

Candida yeast infection is due to an overgrowth of a type of fungus over the body. Candida yeast infection or Candidiasis is the most commonly observed yeast infection up till now. However, there are sub-categories in the species of Candida and they number up to 20, the most common among them is Candida Albicans.

These fungi can cause infections anywhere on the body as they reside on the surfaces of our bodies and when they receive favorable circumstances, they multiply in huge numbers.

The formation of such a vast cluster of fungi over a particular section of the body results in causing infection. The favorable conditions for the outgrowth of these fungi or yeast are moist and warm places which trigger the vulnerability of infection.

Where is the Infection Caused?

As I have already mentioned above, moist and warm places are the most favorable conditions for the infection to spread its roots, you must also note that places that are at the highest risk of this infection are where two skin regions frequently or constantly touch or rub against each other.

Such areas are called intertriginous regions. At these places, air is hard to reach and therefore they remain moist due to sweat incurred by touching or rubbing. Such areas include armpits, groins, places between toes and fingers, corner of the mouth, nail beds and so on. Vaginal yeast infection is also one of the most common candida infections.

You must be thinking how this infection can be identified. What could be the observable and catchy symptoms that would alarm you about this infection?

I must tell you that symptoms of this infection depend on upon the area infected. However, the most common are itchy rashes, dark red patches over the surface of the skin, accumulation of white layer over the infected area, developing of cracks on the skin causing soreness, the sometimes emergence of pimples with white heads over a patch of infected skin.

How can Candida Yeast Infection be Cured?

Although there are a number of medications and pills available to cure candida yeast infection, there is nothing better than something natural that does not leave behind any other side-effects to your body.

Taking Probiotics is the best way to cure this infection. In today’s hectic lifestyle people have become more dependent on the unnatural and artificial sources and find in them answers to their every question. But in this case, it is advisable to rely on a natural and organic product like probiotics.

Do Probiotics really work?

Indeed the question is obvious, as we all become suspicious when it comes to our health. We tend to believe more in all sorts of red, yellow and green allopathic tablets and capsules, but become doubtful if advised for herbs and an organic treatment.

The solution to this problem is very simple. I have already mentioned that these fungi or yeasts live on the surface of our bodies like some unwanted natural residents and this is the reason that doctors these days do not advise you to go for allopathic treatments.

Till the situation is under control and the infection does not grow into something deadly, they would prefer giving you natural supplements like probiotics. These probiotics are not candies but are well-researched products, specially designed to work against the infection and treat it in best possible ways without even harming other parts of your body.

How does a Probiotic Work?

Probiotics attack the candida infection, not in just one way; rather it works on multiple levels. Probiotics, first of, all replace all the good bacteria that were present in your body within the digestive tract before the fungus attacked your body.

Now you must be pondering why there is a need to replace good bacteria. The reason behind is that these were the very bacteria that failed to protect your body against the candida infection and allowed the yeast to spread throughout. Therefore, there is an utmost need to eliminate and destroy all the good bacteria in order to restore your body back to normal and also make your immune system stronger.

Secondly, these probiotics containing antifungal elements, help in slowing down the spreading of infection and, thus, putting an end to the candida yeast infection altogether. The release of bacteria by these probiotics help in killing away the yeasts, maintain the pH levels and also digest the food so that we don’t suffer from declination in nutrients. In this way, your body gets back to its normal healthy state.

How to Choose a Probiotic for a particular Infection?

An effective probiotic is that which comprises of a correct diet and potential antifungals. But you must now be thinking that there are a number of probiotics available in the market, all consisting of the same combination of required components then how should a better one be chosen?

The key point to be kept in mind while choosing a probiotic is its bacteria count per capsule. If you are a beginner then you should start with a lesser quantity. Although side effects are not generally seen, yet it is better to be cautious. Once you feel comfortable with the composition, you can increase the dosage.

Another important aspect to remember is about the probiotic strains. Probiotics range from containing a single strain to 15 different strains. Although many naturopaths advise you taking those probiotics containing more strains, but you must always check for what suits you better. However, some basic strains that you must look for while choosing a probiotic are as follows:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus – it is the most popular strain, according to what research reveals and it is what strengthens the immune system and also trims down the time period of fungal overgrowth. And, even more, it lessens the outgrowth of candida fungus again and again.

Bifidobacteria Bifidum – it is another most commonly seen strain of probiotics. It enhances the digestion and at the same time increases the immunity of the body. It also helps in the formation of vitamin B.

Which Form should It be Taken in?

As it is known that probiotics are available in both capsule and powder form, you must be thinking of which one should you go for. However, in other cases taking medicine in powder form gives better results but in this case, you should opt for capsules.

The powder may get destroyed in between, before reaching the targeted Candida fungus, however, the capsule body acts as a protective medium for the medicine to reach to the required place without facing much hindrance. And, thus, the capsule pours down all its ingredients to the desired place.

Probiotics vs Antibiotics

The question now arises, why not antibiotics? Antibiotics can undoubtedly work to give you instant relief; however, there is no guarantee that the infection would not come back. Yes, this is true, and also side effects noted against antibiotics are very frequent.

According to the recent research, a Candida infection can be eliminated by not taking starch rich food and antibiotics. You have read it right; antibiotics can prove to be harmful in this case as they can more likely trigger the formation of the same candida yeasts in future.

The role of antibiotics is to kill the yeast and in this process, they also kill other helpful bacteria that aid in digestion and healing up the infection completely.

As a result, the same spot and now the other parts also are left more vulnerable to attract the same candida yeasts and, thus, the process becomes recurrent and threatening once again.

Types of Probiotics

There are many different types of probiotics available in the market, catering to different types of candida yeast infections. Depending on the type and place of infection, you must choose probiotics accordingly. Some of the readily available probiotics are mentioned as follows.

Saccharomyces bollard is one of the types which possess strong and powerful properties to work against Candida infection. It cuts short the mass of Candida fungus on the infected area and reduces inflammation. It also works in restoring and enhancing the functioning of digestive tract so that the body heals up quickly with the nutrients from food. It contains Lactobacillus Acidophilus strains and, therefore, has more antifungal properties to attack the Candida.

Bifidobacteria works mainly against the constipation issues that people suffering from Candida infection often face. Thus, we can say it also helps in regulating the digestive tract of the body. Therefore, it could also be taken along with other probiotics that work mainly in the killing of Candida yeasts.

Therefore, after all, this research on Candida yeast infection and probiotics, it is quite clear that probiotics indeed are helpful in solving Candida infections. However, you must always consult your doctor before reaching out to any conclusion as different people have different requirements.
