To explain this phenomenon, the above-named researcher and her colleagues worked with 183 participants. These participants are all overweight or obese. They subjected every participant to a weight loss program.

This weight loss program included replacing their normal meal and of course, setting behavioral goals for them. Some of these goals include calorie tracking as well as increase the physical activities they get on daily basis.  These participants were required to keep a record of any food-related behaviors they experienced. They were also asked to attend mandatory weekly weigh-in sessions. After two years of starting the weight loss program, these participants were weight again albeit for the final time.

According to the result of this research, the participants who were able to experience a consistent weight loss in the first six and 12 months of starting the program have more chances of maintaining their weight loss at 12 and 24 months, in comparison to participants whose weight fluctuated during this period.

The team believed that it is less likely that an individual who lost, for an instance, 5 pounds in 1 week, regained 3 pounds the next week, and lost 2 pounds the following week to achieve long-term weight loss. However, an individual who consistently lost one pound over the same 3-week period is more likely to achieve a long-term weight loss.

How Does Food-Related Behaviors Affect the Long-Term Weight Loss?

Dr. Emily Feig and her team were eager to know how food-related behaviors affected the long-term weight loss. They discovered that the program participants who reported having a lower preoccupation with food, lower emotional eating, and lower binge eating experienced greater weight fluctuations and lose the lower amount of weight compared to others.

The above discovery led the team to believe that an individual’s action towards food or the individual food-related behavior may not influence long-term weight loss. Instead, it could be the ability to maintain a consistent weight loss over a period of time.
